    About Where Do Gays Retire?

    Behind The Mic

    Mark Goldstein
    Show Host

Mark grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and lived in Queens, NY, Westchester County, NY, and Stamford Connecticut before moving to the Tampa Bay area in Florida.  Soon after moving to Florida,  Mark and his husband Peter realized that retiring in Florida wasn’t a great choice. This is when Mark started a Facebook group called “Where Do Gays Retire.”

It took a few years for the group to gain momentum, and then suddenly there was an explosion of growth. From a handful of members, to today’s 12,300+ membership, the group continues to grow and provide the LGBTQ+ community with information on where to retire globally.

Mark started Zoom sessions with people from all over the world who are living in LGBTQ+ desirable locations to educate others.

His latest project was to expand on the Zoom idea to gain a larger audience. The Where Do Gays Retire Podcast was born.

    Podcast Pick: Making Gay History

My most recent Podcast Pick is Making Gay History. This podcast has been around for 12 seasons (and counting) but I just discovered it on my morning walk. It was fascinating to hear the host talk about coming of age in the 1970s (we’re one year apart in age) and to hear again about the nascent gay rights movement struggling to achieve rights in that period. There are several audio clips provided in the podcast, including one of Huey P. Newton of the Black Panthers standing in solidarity with the gay rights groups, and another of Sylvia Rivera, the famous trans activist I had the privilege of meeting before she died in 2002. This is fascinating stuff, and an essential reminder of where we came from and the returning oppression many of us face in states across the U.S. today. Sadly, what’s old is new, and we will find ourselves once again being activists for what we gained, lost, and may need to regain in the coming years.

Up next: Where Gays Do Gays Retire, with host Mark Goldstein.

Podcast Pick: Rachel Maddow Presents Ultra

I’m listening to this podcast as I write this! It’s captivating, and the parallel to our own recent history is chilling. This one’s a must-listen. – Mark

    About Rachel Maddow Presents Ultra

Sitting members of Congress aiding and abetting a plot to overthrow the government. Insurrectionists criminally charged with plotting to end American democracy for good. Justice Department prosecutors under crushing political pressure. Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra is the all-but-forgotten true story of good, old-fashioned American extremism getting supercharged by proximity to power. When extremist elected officials get caught plotting against America with the violent ultra right, this is the story of the lengths they will go to… to cover their tracks.

Podcast Pick: Queer We Are, with Host Brad Shreve

Many of you will know Brad Shreve from his recently retired podcast Queer Writers of Crime, in with he interviewed a long and stellar list of authors specializing in LGBTQ+ mysteries and thrillers. Brad has launched a new podcasting venture and it’s a good one: Queer We Are. Brad has in-depth conversations with guests ranging from drag icon Miss Coco Peru, to author John Berendt, whose Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was a sensation as a book and as a movie.

    About Queer We Are

Each week on Queer We Are,  Brad Shreve hosts LGBTQ performers, athletes, politicians, activists, and even people you never heard of making a difference in their neighborhood. Podcast Pick: Queer Writers of Crime, with Host Brad Shreve

Recently named by BuzzFeed as one of the 20 best LGBTQ podcasts to listen to, Brad Shreve’s Queer Writers of Crime has returned better than ever. After a brief hiatus following his first 100 episodes, host Shreve has brought this essential podcast back for fans of LGBTQ+ mysteries, thrillers and suspense fiction and the authors who write them. Podcast Pick: History Briefs with Host Brad Shreve

I’m not a podcast connoisseur but I know a good one when I hear it, and History Briefs, with host Brad Shreve, is a winner. Brad burst onto the scene with his Queer Writers of Crime podcast (full disclosure, I was a guest), a wonderful series of interviews with LGBTQ+ writers of mysteries, thrillers and crime fiction. And now he’s hit on an idea whose time has come: short, 20-minute-or-less podcasts about historical facts and events we may never have even known we wanted to learn about – but we do! These podcasts are addictive, and can be listened to on the drive to work, or getting your steps in, cleaning the kitchen, or just sitting spellbound while he tells us the real stories of the Mayo Clinic’s beginnings, the famous and infamous Combat Zone in Boston, the some-say-dubious accomplishments of Alfred Nobel, and more.

Podcast Pick: The Love and Luck Podcast (Australia’s First LGBT Audio Drama Podcast)

Having recently started a new short-form podcast, I was curious to see what else was out there and I happened upon this gem. I don’t know why it was included in a list of short-form shows but it’s a winner, and just in time for Pride month! Very sweet, I think you’ll love it. – Mark/Editor

    The Love and Luck Podcast

“Love and Luck is a fictional radio play podcast, told via voicemails and set in present day Melbourne, Australia.  A slice of life queer romance story with a touch of magic, it follows the relationship between two men, Jason and Kane, as their love grows both for each other and their community.

You can listen to Love and Luck via your favourite podcast app, here on the website, or even over on youtube, where episodes are captioned!”

    Among the Reviews

“In a world full of true crime podcasts and anti-heroes and dark storylines, Love and Luck is a breath of fresh air. After just a few episodes, I’ve found the acting superb, the characters endearing and relatable, and the script wonderfully observed.”

    — Peter Wells, podcast critic for the Sydney Morning Herald

“There’s something to be said for an explicitly kind show that won’t end in trauma. There’s something therapeutic in being able to wait for a narrative to unfold without the constant worry that it’s going to turn tragic. There’s something healing in being faced with constant news of your community facing more and more peril, and having something like Love and Luck to remind you that sometimes, things do end well.”
