Quote for the Week
“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” – Mark Twain
BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: Georgia Senator Rafael Warnock WON! The Respect for Marriage Act heads to Biden’s desk. Brittney Griner was freed from Russian captivity. And that’s just the last 48 hours. What a week!
The manufactured case of graphic designer Lorie Smith, wannabe victim and Evangelical tool, afforded SCOTUS the chance to display its comedy chops, with Samuel Alito scoring big with a joke about Black kids in KKK costumes. Can an HBO special be far behind?

Quote for the Week:
“You’re guaranteed to have outcomes you like and outcomes you don’t like in a democracy.” – PA Senator-Elect John Fetterman
BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: Michael Moore was right. The dreaded red tide we’d been warned about by the media’s relentless drumbeat turned into a puddle. Democrats kept the Senate, lost the House by a slim margin, and vindicated President Biden’s first two years.
Nancy Pelosi will be stepping down from her leadership position. Marjorie Taylor Greene prepares to lead the rabid pack of GOP revenge seekers. Trump announced his run for 2024 in one of the week’s most anticlimactic stunts. And the Respect for Marriage Act was set for an almost-assured passage for the holidays.

Quote for the Week:
“In the long run, you make your own luck—good, bad, or indifferent.” – Loretta Lynn
BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
A desperate Putin launched a series of attacks on Ukraine following an explosion on a bridge linking Russia to the stolen territory of Crimea.
President Biden indicated he’s open to reevaluating the U.S. relationship with Saudi Arabia following OPEC’s planned cut in oil production, widely seen as a betrayal.
And just as we’d begun recovering from the death of Loretta Lynn, Cabot Cove’s indomitable Angela Lansbury passed away at 96. We can’t take much more.

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: coffee drinking is associated with increased longevity, in which case I’ll live forever, and Mitch McConnell backs the Electoral Count Reform Act.
Hurricane Ian slammed into Florida as a Category 4 storm before moving on to batter South Carolina. Judge “Trump’s My Boo” Cannon ruled against her own Special Master, making clear whose puppet she is, and Ginni “Looney Tunes” Thomas told the January 6 Committee she still believes the 2020 election was stolen. We have two words for her: GORE WON.

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: President Biden’s approval rating ticked up to 45 percent, boding well for the Democrats. The President also declared the pandemic over. Go Dark Brandon! Cherry on top: New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a $250 million civil suit against the Trumps for their massive real estate fraud no one was surprised to learn about.
Donald Trump has gone full QAnon, while denying doing any such thing. Whether it’s their relentless attacks on all things trans and drag (with the rest of us in the queue), or their delight at the inhumane treatment of migrants, ‘the GOP base’ cheers the increasing cruelty of their own party. And a new study found that COVID appears to significantly raise the risk of Alzheimer’s in older adults. What a world.

Quote for the Week: “This is the true joy in life, being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”
-George Bernard Shaw
BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: The House of Representatives passed a bill codifying marriage equality, with 47 Republicans of good conscience joining them. Slovenly scamp Steve Bannon was found guilty of Contempt of Congress. And Sen. Josh Hawley launched a new career in comedy with video of him fleeing the January 6 mob after encouraging them to attack the Capitol. Instant classic!
President Joe Biden contracted Covid. And haters in Texas launched six lawsuits targeting LGBTQ rights and marriage equality, betting on Clarence Thomas to do the dirty work he’s promised.

Quote for the Week: “The mother’s battle for her child with sickness, with poverty, with war, with all the forces of exploitation and callousness that cheapen human life needs to become a common human battle, waged in love and in the passion for survival.” – Adrienne Rich
BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe has resulted in a surge in vasectomies. That’s about it for the week.
A 10-year-old rape victim was denied an abortion in Ohio and had to travel to Indiana to escape the forced birth of her rapist. Basketball superstar and Russian hostage Brittney Griner plead guilty to possessing hashish vape cartridges. And Rep. Liz Cheney said the greater danger to the U.S. is in not prosecuting Trump.

Quote for the Week: “For many LGBTQ+ kids, libraries are a place of refuge and information where they can be welcomed and affirmed for who they are. We will not tolerate a ‘Don’t Say Gay’ philosophy taking root in our state.” – New York Governor Kathy Hochul
BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: A record number of LGBTQ candidates are running for Congress, “motivated in part by red states passing scores of laws targeting LGBTQ people.” (Axios.) Closets? What closets?
The Texas GOP blasted off the rails with a party platform brimming with everything hateful they could think of, from returning women to the status of property, to ending marriage equality and calling gay lives abnormal. They feasted on the delusion that Biden’s not really the President, and they washed it all down with a with a secession chaser. That’s what I call a tease!

First the good news: President Biden issued an executive order that protects LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy. The order also expands access to comprehensive health care, addresses LGBTQ discrimination in foster care, strengthens support for older LGBTQ adults, and promotes increased federal data collection on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Meanwhile on the dark side, three homes burned down when a Pride flag was set on fire in a Baltimore neighborhood.

Quote for the Week: “Pain is always political. It’s just that we allow politics and politicians to decide whose pain counts and whose does not.” – Dahlia Lithwick
BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: the January 6th Commission finally began public hearings, available to everyone but Fox viewers. More adults across all ethic groups identify as LGBT, and Rebel Wilson found true love with her very own ‘Disney Princess.’ So sweet.
The Free Dystopia of Florida continued its assault on transgender people, seeking to deny Medicaid coverage for life-saving and medically accepted treatments. Texas state representative Bryan Slaton joined the lone star freakshow by demanding a ban on kids at drag shows, with parents losing their parental rights if they take little Suzie to see her favorite Guncle Brad doing Liza in her prime. Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, and hate some more.
Lastly, in a collapsing American empire that has no bottom, feral pigs live to be shot another day by farmers with AR-15s. No comment yet on feral children.

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: I’m going on a 10-night cruise! Starting Monday the 23rd, husband Frank and I will be sailing away to Bermuda and Charleston. See you in June.

Quote for the Week: “We had a horrible plague, followed by two years of Covid.” – President Biden at the White House Correspondents Dinner
BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES
First the good news: New Jersey has banned plastic bags. Watermelon gummies are now available at a cannabis dispensary near you (NJ), and President Biden’s approval rating has ticked up 5 points since February.
The Supreme Court that insists it’s not political showed itself to be completely, frighteningly, political in a leaked draft opinion by cultural Neanderthal Samuel Alito. The Justice assures us his draconian reasoning for overturning Roe will not extend to other rights (like same-sex marriage). We know he lies, as surely as he and his extremist cadre lied to get on the court.
