BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES

And so it ends—the war in Afghanistan is over. Biden takes the hit, and he also takes responsibility, something we haven’t seen for, oh, four years or so.

Anti-vaxxers continue to ramp up their violent rhetoric, in futile rage against the nation’s attempt to stop a virus that doesn’t care about anyone’s civil rights. It just kills, and it has been on a spree. Welcome to Florida!

Texas made abortion all but illegal, with an assist from Supreme Court conservatives who have stopped pretending to be anything but enforcers for an extremist Republican agenda. Freedom flickers out one majority opinion at a time.

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES

Maybe this should be called The End Times Tribune instead, considering the state of the world.

Afghanistan continues to suck up all the desert air in the room, providing plenty of ammunition for people with their hate phasers aimed at President Biden, including a breathless and hyperventilating media that hasn’t been this frothed up since Trump was president.

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S BIG STORIES

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned rather than face impeachment over multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, paving the way for the state’s first female governor.

Coming to a bridge near you: President Biden’s ambitious infrastructure bill passed the Senate with significant bipartisan support, paving the way (pun intended!) for progress on his agenda.

And as the Delta variant spreads, some large school districts in Texas and Florida are defying their governors and instituting mask mandates. Now we see them, now we don’t.

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S BIG STORIES

Gotta go Cuomo! A report on New York’s handsy governor made it clear he’s guilty of abusing his power to sexually harass women while simultaneously grossing them out. Even President Biden said it’s time to go. And that singing!

A bipartisan infrastructure deal appears possible, at the same time Mitch McConnell threatens to crash the debt ceiling. The former President lashed out against the U.S. women’s soccer team so he could use the word ‘woke’ again, while Simone Biles came back for a bronze.

And to end your week on an up note, scientists fear a worst-case, doomsday COVID variant is coming. Take that, optimists!

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S BIG STORIES

This week brought us summer’s biggest blockbuster with the January 6 Commission hearings, starring House Democrats and two Republicans risking it all for the truth, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. Reached for comment, Blue Lives Matter spokesman Tuffy McTuffguy said, “Fake news! If those is cops, I’m da Pope.”

It was a rainbow spectacular at the Tokyo Olympics as more out athletes than ever showed that elite athletes can be gay athletes too, including gold medal diving heartthrob Tom Daley. Meanwhile, Pink offered to pay the fine leveled against the Norwegian women’s handball team for wearing shorts instead of peekaboo bikini bottoms.

The Delta virus continued to make its lethal, indifferent way through the unvaccinated population, which has apparently taken the ‘live free or die’ motto to heart. Will last year’s hottest mask fashions be on this year’s runway? Let’s hope not. Vaxports, get your vaxports here! I’ve got mine.

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES

In addition to the casualties from Coronavirus, U.S. drug overdose deaths spiked 30 percent in 2020.

Tennessee drove full speed toward the crazy cliff, surrendering to anti-vax extremists, and we mean ALL VACCINES. Has there been a better time to invest in iron lungs and measles merch? Preventable childhood diseases, come on down!

President “Legitimate Joe” Biden gave a speech about the survival of democracy, while the last one admitted at the second annual CPAC hatefest this year that he just makes stuff up. Bad poll? It’s fake!

BIG CUP: THE WEEK’S TOP STORIES

Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated at his home, threatening to throw the country into chaos. Within hours, four suspects were killed and two others arrested.

The Surfside, Florida, condo collapse search officially went from rescue to recovery, as survivors were not expected to be found.

New York Democratic mayoral candidate Eric Adams was declared the primary winner after a messy vote count and national embarrassment. He will face Republican Curtis Sliwa, of Guardian Angel fame, in the November election.

COVID cases continued to rise, with increases due to the Delta variant and continued resistance to vaccinations in some parts of the country.
