On the Map: Getting the Royal Treatment on Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas

Sailing the Atlantic in Style

There’s something magical about waking up to nothing but ocean on the horizon — a vast expanse of blue stretching endlessly in every direction. That’s exactly what I experienced aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, one of the line’s most innovative and dazzling ships. This wasn’t just any cruise — it was a transatlantic journey, a voyage that invited both adventure and reflection as we crossed from Europe to the Americas.

A Floating World of Wonder

From the moment we stepped on board in Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, we knew this would be among our favorite cruises. Odyssey of the Seas is a marvel — sleek, modern, and full of energy, from the ship sailing through the Atlantic waves to the ever–pleasant presnce of the crew. Its open spaces gleam with glass and light, while its art installations and design details remind you that this is as much a journey of the senses as it is a voyage across the sea.

We quickly discovered that this ship offers everything you could dream of and more: multiple pools (including the adults-only Solarium), high-tech entertainment (my personal favorite was the Nashvill Tenors), and dining options that often rival any fine restaurant. Whether you’re in the mood for fine dining at Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar or a quick bite from El Loco Fresh by the pool, the culinary experiences were plentiful and pleasing.

Days at Sea: The Luxury of Time

One of my favorite parts of cruising are the sea days. In that respenct, a transatlantic cruise has many to offer. Sea days are for lounging, reading, exploring the ship, or joining one of the endless activities Royal Caribbean offers: trivia contests, dance classes, art auctions, and even skydiving at the RipCord by iFly simulator. Our personal frequent pasttime is playing card games with our frequent travelling compnions, Michael. He gets his own cabinl, and we spend must of the time together.

Evenings brought another kind of magic. The ship came alive with music, laughter and shows. This time we saw The Book, an original production that combined dance, acrobatics, and digital artistry into a spellbinding spectacle. The lead was the same outstanding performer and vocalist we’d seen the Royal Caribbean’s production of Spectra’s Cabaret on two other cruises.

Community at Sea

One of the most unexpected joys of a long cruise is the sense of community that forms among passengers. With so many days together, faces become familiar, friendships form over morning coffee or late-night cocktails. Conversations drift between travel tales and plans for future adventures — everyone united by the shared wonder of the ocean. We also meet people during our ports of call, and this time we met a lovely couple, Genny and Paul, from Canada. I’ve since kept in touch with Genny and anticipate a lasting friendship.

Crossing the Atlantic

There’s something profoundly humbling about sailing across the Atlantic. It’s easy to forget, in our age of airplanes and instant communication, how immense and powerful the ocean truly is. Each day, the temperature shifted subtly, the time zones ticked by, and we followed the sun westward — a slow migration toward new shores.

A word out time zones: It can be exhausting to wake up to a clock that turns back an hour most days as you sail back to the Unite States. I’m still recovering from that, including waking up at 2:00 a.m. I’ll adjust eventually.

A Journey to Remember

The Odyssey of the Seas isn’t just a ship — it’s a destination in itself, a place where time slows and life feels luxuriously unhurried. For anyone dreaming of a voyage that combines relaxation, indulgence, and a dash of adventure, a transatlantic cruise aboard this magnificent vessel is pure perfection.

Crossing the ocean reminded me that sometimes the best journeys are not about getting somewhere fast — they’re about savoring every moment along the way.
