It’s not surprising that so many people don’t know Jim Thorpe is a place. Named after the legendary Native American athlete, the town changed its name from Mauch Chunk when Thorpe’s widow agreed to have him re-buried here in exchange for the town being named after him.

This is our second trip here. We’d visited a couple years ago during the pandemic, and I wanted to come back when the weather was warm and things were normal – although we’ve learned that the old normal will never really return.

We’re staying at the Inn at Jim Thorpe, a pleasantly old and well-kept hotel in the center of the small town. The Wi-Fi is sketchy at best, and almost nothing opens before 8:00 a.m. (thank goodness for the Turkey Hill mini-mart up the street). It’s a good place for hiking, taking the scenic train tour, and the trolley. Also, there are a number of towns not far from here if you’re in the mood for taking some day trips. Overall, it’s a place we’re glad to have visited, and now we can put it on the “done that” list. Is that a recommendation or not? I’d say if you’re not travelling far, and you want to try out a very quaint small town with Swiss architecture and some gorgeous scenery, it’s a to-do.

More About Jim Thorpe

Often described as a  hidden gem, Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, fits the description. Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, this charming borough is a perfect destination for a weekend getaway. With its rich history and natural beauty, Jim Thorpe has something to offer everyone.

History Buffs Rejoice!

Jim Thorpe is named after the famous Native American athlete and Olympic gold medalist, Jim Thorpe. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was renamed in 1954 in honor of Thorpe, who is buried here, complete with a monument dedicated to him. The town is home to several museums, including the Old Jail Museum, which housed the infamous Molly Maguire gang, and the Mauch Chunk Museum, which showcases the town’s history and culture.

Outdoor Adventures Await!

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the natural beauty of the town and its surroundings. The Lehigh River Gorge is a popular spot for hiking, biking, and white-water rafting. The Glen Onoko Falls Trail is a must-see with its picturesque waterfalls and breathtaking views. The Pocono Mountains provide endless opportunities for outdoor adventures that will satisfy even the most daring of thrill-seekers. At the end of a long day, sit back, relax, and enjoy a peaceful sunset over the mountains.

Eat and Drink Your Way Through Jim Thorpe

If you’re looking for a taste of the local cuisine, you’ll find many good dining options here. From cozy cafes to fine dining restaurants, there’s something to please every palate. Be sure to check out the Molly Maguire’s Pub and Steakhouse, which serves up delicious steaks and seafood in a historic setting. For a more casual dining experience, the Broadway Grille and Pub is a great spot for burgers and beers (as well as being located on the lower level of the Inn at Jim Thorpe, where we stayed).

Plan Your Visit for a Day or a Weekend

With so much to see and do, Jim Thorpe is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. The town’s welcoming atmosphere, rich history, and stunning natural beauty will make you want to stay longer. Whether you’re interested in exploring the town’s museums, taking a hike through the mountains, or indulging in the local cuisine, Jim Thorpe has something to please everyone.

Next up: our return to Lancaster, PA, a return-visit favorite.

We’ve stayed at the same hotel for a few years now, and it’s become our home away from home when we visit our friends there. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff is friendly, the pool is open late–all great qualities in a hotel. Plus, being so close to downtown Lancaster means there’s plenty of restaurants and attractions within walking distance. Coming later in June …
